The Spirit Warrior's Dream is set in the near future. America, due to a series of natural and man-made disasters has been reduced to a 60 square mile megalopolis called The Great Strip City. The Mighty Four, leaders of major corporations, with the aid of take-over masterminds Chano and Omar, have seized control of the nation and divided it into Zones. Chano has developed a technique for mass brainwashing through use of media technology. Charming and articulate Omar is the face and voice of ideas that the masses buy into. There is a dreamless, spiritless peace and order in The Great Strip City. But that quickly changes when the Mighty Four suddenly (and mysteriously) die and the Zones go to war with each other. Soon the only survivors are a few adults and gangs of youth who struggle everyday to stay alive amid the chaos and violence of The Madness Time.
Makeda is a young woman who, years before, had led a group of children to safety in an abandoned prison called Yesterday. At Yesterday one of the adults who had managed to survive mentors Makeda and the others about the history and hope of America and the power of dreams.
In the City a charismatic gang leader named Train is gaining power with a promise of peace and a better life for all in the reclaimed and rebuilt lands outside of The Great Strip City. He preaches that the America of the past has failed and that when given the freedom to choose, people always make the wrong choice. Strong leadership is needed. He, like Makeda, has an adult mentor.
In a whirlwind of swiftly changing events, Makeda and Train, with their respective "armies", will soon meet and challenge each other in a battle to determine the American future.
The Spirit Warrior's Dream is a story of clashing ideas, faith in the human spirit, unchecked ambition, love, betrayal and the power of dreams. It is a story of young people forced to make big decisions while clinging to or forfeiting their humanity. It is a life and death struggle to survive and claim the future while asking the question: Is America a failed idea whose time has passed or a dream yet to be fulfilled?
