SYNOPSIS

After decades of social upheaval and environmental disaster, America is now jammed into a space a tenth of its original size, called The Great Strip City. Food and water are in short supply, corruption is rampant, and violence is on the rise while the pillars of government and business have fallen apart. Things are bad and about to get worse. One night the lights go out and angry mobs take to the streets in what will be called The Madness Time.

The Ecchos, urban griots, recount what happened in America through the stories of four friends. Makeda is a woman strong with the power of music and dreams. Train emerges as a charismatic force whose stark vision of the future dismisses America’s history.  Omar is Makeda’s protector,  torn between preparing for war or searching for peace. Second becomes Train’s second-in-command with her own ambitions.

The only place safe from the anger and violence was a former maximum-security prison called Yesterday. A teacher named Leta has led a group of young people there, including Makeda, Train, Omar and Second, hoping to prepare them to pick up the pieces of a nation in ruins. But the friends take different paths with conflicting ideas about how to rebuild a once great nation. At the core of their disagreement is the question, “Is America a failed idea whose time has passed or an unfinished dream?”

Tony Lindsay lit us up with his soulful baritone vocals and ribald humor. He drove through the SF Pride Parade to make our session in Marin, reprising the vocal role of Omar. Tony is in front, with Bob, Ricardo, and engineer Ari Rios in back.

Raz Kennedy, vocal coach extraordinaire, was a major help in Teres'a vocal sessions. Teresa Kali Stark brought soul and firey improvisation to the vocal role of Makeda. Schleeter and Pitts-Wiley loved working with these two!

THE EXULT CHOIR is a group on the rise! They brought the gospel sound and a bundle of exuberance. All respect and love for director Kim Pitts-Wiley.

Kim not only led the choir (in every way!) she brought expressive power to the vocal role of Second.

Greg Scott reprised the vocal role of Train, showing off his thrilling rock tenor voice from his home studio in Los Angeles.

Lauri Smalls brought an authentic blend of soul and gospel to her vocal role as Leta, and as a key contributor to the Exult Choir.

David Noble rocked the role of Looms, doing his recording at his Petulama, CA home studio.

Rapper Marlon Richardson, aka UnLearn the World, brought an urban edge to his role as storyteller GFX ("nothing but the Truth"). Ricardo and Bob appreciated working at his Hip Hop For Change project studio in Hunter's Point.

Rapper Kaila Love brought both fire and playfulness to the role of storyteller SZO. Besides her talent and good humor she proved to be a tech wizard!

Julie Lewis brought her soaring soprano once again, this time to the role of NT

Tina Bryant lent her gospel roots on the Hammond B3 and the grand piano

David Rokeach brought a wealth of experience to a wide variety of tracks. Bob was lucky enough to guide the final session at David's home studio in Oakland on David's 64th birthday!

John Mader - oh my goodness!

Timmy Stabler, at 24, was the youngest musician on the recordings but you'd never know that from his playing.  A Victor Wooten protegee, Timmy collaborated with us from NYC.

Richard Leiter is a long-time contributor to The Spirit Warrior's Dream, bringing creative and masterful keyboards.

Angeline Saris is another logtime contributor to the show. She worked with Bob on the latest tracks from her kitchen in San Rafael, CA
